Digital Nomad in Slovenia: Move with Your Family and Try a New Way of Life

Imagine starting your morning with coffee in Ljubljana, spending the day working on your usual projects, and enjoying an evening walk along the river with your family. At the weekend, you could head to the coast, explore the Alps or spend a day by a lake.

If your work only requires a laptop and an internet connection, you can choose where to live around what matters to you. Slovenia’s Digital Nomad programme offers the opportunity to live in the country for up to one year while continuing to work remotely for the overseas market — and discover whether Slovenia is right for you and your family.

Who are digital nomads?

A digital nomad is someone whose work is not tied to a particular office. Programmers, designers, marketers, consultants and many other professionals can do their work online.

You do not have to travel constantly with a suitcase. You can choose one country, rent a home, set up a workspace and enjoy your usual routine in a new setting.

Slovenia’s programme is intended for citizens of countries outside the EU and the European Economic Area who work remotely for a company outside Slovenia or carry out self-employed work abroad. The work must meet the programme’s conditions and must not involve entering the Slovenian labour market.

Why Slovenia?

Slovenia brings together very different landscapes and ways to spend your free time within a relatively small area.

From Ljubljana, you can reach the coast or some Alpine destinations in approximately an hour. Travel times depend on your destination and traffic: allow around an hour to an hour and a half for the coast, and longer during busy periods. The appeal is that you do not need to wait for a long holiday to enjoy a change of scenery.

A walk through the old town today, sea air and lunch on the coast on Saturday, a forest trail or a mountain lake on Sunday. For someone who spends much of the day at a screen, having nature nearby can make a real difference to everyday life.

Ljubljana may suit those who enjoy city life: cafés, social events, culture and riverside walks. Smaller towns may appeal to people looking for a quieter pace. The right choice depends on your habits, budget and how you imagine an ordinary day.

Up to a year to find out whether it feels like home

Moving abroad does not have to begin with a decision to stay forever.

A Digital Nomad residence permit is issued for up to one year. It gives you the opportunity to experience Slovenia beyond a holiday: live in a neighbourhood, meet your neighbours, find a favourite market, experience the changing seasons and understand your actual living costs.

You can use this time to discover how working from Slovenia suits you, how your family settles in and whether you would like to make longer-term plans.

The Digital Nomad permit cannot be extended. However, while it is valid, you may apply for a residence permit on another basis if you meet the relevant requirements.

Moving with your family

For many people, the key question is simple: “Can my family come with me?”

Digital nomads in Slovenia can apply for family reunification without the usual one-year waiting period. This makes it possible to plan a move with a spouse and children who meet the family reunification requirements.

Each family member still needs the relevant documents and permission to reside. No one-year waiting period does not mean instant approval, but it removes the need to postpone the family’s move for a year solely because of that requirement.

Exploring a new place together can make settling in easier: choosing a neighbourhood, making a home, discovering walking routes and creating family traditions.

Where does your move begin?

Start by thinking about the life you would like to lead.

For some people, being close to the sea is the priority. Others prefer living in the capital and visiting the mountains at weekends. For families with children, schools, language and a convenient neighbourhood may come first.

The next step is to check whether your remote work qualifies, which documents and evidence of financial means you will need, and how to organise your move.

Slovenia could be a place to keep the work you enjoy and try a different pace of life — with nature close by and your family together.
